Parting ways

by Maureen Smith

first sign,
You and earth,
and me
thick rich wood
back against tree
you pull, pull me up
lip meets finger
ripe, not ready
took the world
together we, we linger
arm intertwines with thigh, fixed, and
steady.

fingers
wrapped around the steering wheel
then tight and the tension lingers
windows up and
eyes on me
before the influx of the world
the only girl
and i thought
i’d grow out of it as i got older
but even now
i keep thinking of the place
where the slope of the neck meets the shoulder.
